Receives Orders for FPC Sub-assemblies for Cellular Phone LCD Modules

VANCOUVER, CANADA -- May 19, 2003 -- Nam Tai Electronics, Inc. (“Nam Tai” or the “Company”) (NYSE Symbol: NTE; CBOE Symbol: QNA) today announced it has received orders from a customer to manufacture flexible printed circuit (“FPC”) sub-assemblies for cellular phones. The Company recently announced its installation of a new FPC sub-assembly line and plans to use that sub-assembly line for these orders. To date, Nam Tai has already delivered 662,000 units of fine pitch FPC sub-assemblies to this customer. This FPC sub-assembly is the major component of high-resolution color LCD modules for cellular phones. The assembly process includes a precise power IC attachment and the application of a lead-free solder process. Unlike the method involved in assembling many printed circuit boards, the process involved in this FPC surface mount technology demands a meticulously accurate alignment technique that produces subassemblies of very high quality.

“We are very pleased to be granted the opportunity of manufacturing high technology FPC sub-assemblies for LCD modules,” commented Mr. Tadao Murakami, Nam Tai’s Chairman. “This new business, not only diversifies our product mix, but also enhances our services to customers and marks a further step toward vertical integration of our production of LCD modules.”
